FAQ

How is Mcode related to ZCode?

Mcode is a rebranded build of the open-source ZCode project (Apache-2.0) with the same features plus privacy and headless-Linux improvements. It is an unofficial community edition and is not affiliated with Z.ai or Zhipu AI.

How does auto-update work?

The desktop app periodically reads the update manifests (latest*.yml) under https://mcode.hjh.im/download/latest/. Windows and Linux download in-app and install on restart; unsigned macOS builds open this site's download page so you can replace the app with the new DMG.

macOS says the app can't be verified or is damaged

Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click “Open Anyway”. If it still says damaged, run sudo xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Mcode.app.

Can I use Mcode without a Z.ai account?

Yes. Add a personal model provider (such as an OpenAI-compatible gateway) in Settings and Mcode no longer forces the sign-in page.

Windows SmartScreen blocks the installer

Choose “More info → Run anyway”.
